Watering, discharge

Mild unpredictable watering with soreness, grittiness, itching or burning suggests blepharitis or dry eye syndrome.

Watering with scratching or a sensation of something in the eye may be due to in-turning of the eyelid (entropion) or eyelash misdirection (trichiasis). Watering with more severe unilateral pain and photophobia is seen with corneal abrasions/foreign bodies, corneal infections/inflammations (keratitis) and iritis

Predictable watering with tears dripping onto the cheeks usually indicates a blocked tear duct or a problem with the position or movement of the eyelids such as ectropion.

Discharge may indicate conjunctivitis or occur in association with a blocked tear duct.
