Pricking/scratching/grittiness/soreness

Generalised soreness and dryness and /or grittiness of the eyes is often due to poor tear films (dry eye) , blepharitis or contact lens over-wear.

More specific discomfort giving a sensation of something in the eye, usually unilaterally, is seen with eyelash disorders (trichiasis), and in-turn of the eyelid (entropion). More severe pain is usually present with corneal foreign bodies and abrasions and, if recurring, suggests recurrent corneal erosion syndrome.
