A break in the retina in the centre of the macula leads to formation of a hole around which fluid may accumulate. Probably due to traction forces running across the surface of the retina for no known reason or occasionally following trauma or in association with severe myopia. Middle-aged women most at risk.
Clinical Features
Usually unilateral, progressive onset
Loss of central vision
Distortion
Management
See ophthalmologist soon as early surgery may improve recovery of vision
