A reactivation of latent varicella-zoster virus, from previous chicken pox infection, in the nerves supplying sensation to the eye and face leads to a rash on the skin and inflammation of the eye (shingles of the eye).
Clinical Features
Pain in and around eye
1-2 days later unilateral painful blistering rash of forehead, eyelid and often side of nose
Involvement of the eye is signalled by severe pain in the eye, impaired vision, photophobia, double vision or inflammation
May be followed by long-lasting neuralgic pain
Management
See ophthalmologist urgently if any indication of eye involvement; otherwise GP as soon as possible
