Obstruction to the meibomian eyelid glands causes accumulation of lipid and leads to an inflammatory swelling within the eyelid (Meibomian cyst)
Clinical Features
Initial localised swelling and inflammation in an eyelid
Pain and tenderness
Sometimes become infected or discharge spontaneously
Usually settle to a firm persistent painless nodule
Management
Most settle spontaneously but may last many months.
See ophthalmologist if persistent inflammation or failure to resolve spontaneously.
Minor surgery to release the retained contents usually provides rapid resolution
