Cellulitis

Description

Infection of the tissues of the eyelids (pre-septal cellulitis) or within the orbit (orbital cellulitis). Sinus infection predisposes to orbital cellulitis.

Clinical Features

Unilateral painful swollen inflamed eyelids
Orbital cellulitis may also be accompanied by:
Impaired or double vision
Impaired eye movements
Proptosis
Congestion of the conjunctival blood vessels
Fever and unwell

Management

Mild pre-septal cellulitis usually responds rapidly to oral antibiotics
See ophthalmologist urgently if non-response, severe infection or any sign of orbital cellulitis
