Band Keratopathy

Description

Calcium is deposited in the superficial layers of the cornea, often for no apparent reason or in response to persistent intra-ocular inflammation, a high circulating calcium level or lack of pressure within the eye

Clinical Features

A painless white-yellow band appears horizontally across the cornea
Vision becomes impaired

Management

See ophthalmologist if vision is affected or cosmesis poor
The calcium can be removed mechanically, chemically or by laser
