Artificial eye

Description

A prosthesis to replace an eye that has been removed or to cover an eye that is damaged or cosmetically unsightly.

Generally solid and now constructed from acrylic; cosmetic occlusive contact lenses cover a normal sized but unsightly eye

Clinical Features

The artificial eye is retained within the lids and made to match as far as possible the fellow eye
Movement occurs by loose connection to the underlying eye socket tissues

Management

Intermittently needs to be removed for cleaning
Discomfort or discharge may indicate the need for polishing by the prosthetist
See ophthalmologist with oculoplastic experience if problems with artificial eye or eye socket
