Allergic Dermatitis

Description

Skin inflammation in response to contact with allergens in the environment, around the eye usually due to eye drops, make-up or contact with plants.

Clinical Features

Itch
Inflammation, swelling and scaling of the eyelid skin, typically worse in the lower eyelid
May be associated allergic conjunctivitis

Management

Avoid allergen eg stop eye drops
Generally self-limiting, settling quickly once source removed
See ophthalmologist if on-going eye drops required eg for glaucoma treatment
